Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport is due to open in March 2008 for phase 1 of the project. This will allow the airport to carry an additional 27 million passengers a year increasing to 30 million the following year when phase 2 is completed. This will make Heathrow the worlds busiest airport carrying a total of 90 million passengers. As a result of the opening of the terminal an extra 16,500 jobs will be created giving a total of 84,500. The airport will be slit between short and long haul flights
The new five storied terminal will be big enough to fit 50 football pitches and will host an extra 150 shops and 25 restaurants, including the a designer Prada store and Tiffany boutique. A new railway system has been created and will be situated in the basement of Concourse A with the platforms for the Piccadilly line Tube and Heathrow Express. Further platforms have been created for future expansion.
The terminal been developed with state of the art transportation systems within the airport. Instead of the usual conveyor belts to guide passengers around the terminals, driverless pods will carry travelers to various points within the terminal. The pod known as an automated people mover(APM) are run by computer system along guideways so do not need any staff.
