The Portuguese Republic of (República Portuguesa) is a state in the southwest of the Iberian peninsula. It is limited in the west and the south by the Atlantic ocean, in the east and the north by Spain. Besides the archipelago of the Azores and Madeira belong to the Portuguese national territory. To the West Cabo de Roca is the westernmost point of the European mainland in Lisbon, the southwesternmost point of the European mainland Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St. Vincent) juts out fromthe west. Portugal covers a surface of 92.161 qkm and has approximately 11 million inhabitants.
The national territory of Portugal had been finally colonized in the antiquity by the Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Romans. When the area belonged to the Roman empire, it was called Lusitania (Lusitanien). Later the country was conquered by the Arabs.and only became independant in the 11th century Although Spain and Portugal - the siamese twins of the Iberian peninsula - are referred to as the same country over and over, Portugal has its own character - landscape and language and definitely not in the minds of the people living there.
